8 - Imola
XAVIER SIMEON WINS HIS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE RACE AT IMOLA.
DANIELE BERETTA FOURTH
Enzo e Dino Ferrari Imola Circuit (Italy), Sunday 27th September
2009 – in front of thousands of spectators Xavier Simeon
today took his fourth consecutive win, consolidating his first
position in the overall standings. A solid fourth place finish
for Daniele Beretta.
This was an important win for the Belgian rider who managed
a delicate situation for the duration of the race. Having made
a good start, just behind Badovini, he slowly lost ground to
the leader due to a technical problem with the gearing. Simeon
had to give up the fight for the win and ride less aggressively.
Xavier finished the race second, but was promoted to the top
step of the podium when his rival was disqualified.
XAVIER SIMEON – “It
was a difficult day, but we have nonetheless come out of it
very well. I was having problems with the gearing right from
the start of the race which meant that when changing down from
third to second I often missed the gear. In these conditions
there was no way I could catch Badovani and I preferred to defend
my position, as Corti, my rival for the title, was right behind
me. The win is great payback for my team’s hard work this
weekend and I’m sorry for Ayrton as I respect him and
it wasn’t his fault. I’m happy to have given Ducati
this great result at its home track.”
Daniele Beretta was not in the best physical shape and this
prevented him from keeping pace with the frontrunners in the
first laps. The Italian rider is still getting over the flu
and, although he tried to stick with the race leaders, muscular
aches in his left arm meant he was only able to defend fifth
position. The final result, after the “winner” was
disqualified, was a fourth place for Beretta.
DANIELE BERETTA – “I’m
not very happy with the result but today it was hard to do more.
I wasn’t feeling well when I arrived here and had a high
temperature and then this pain in my left forearm meant I couldn’t
ride as I’d hoped to. Fourth place isn’t bad and
we’ll look to improve on this Magny-Cours.”
