XAVIER SIMEON COMES A CLOSE SECOND AT MONZA; FOURTH PLACE
FINISH FOR BERETTA.
Monza (Italy) Sunday 10th May 2009: second place on the podium
for Xavier Simeon at Monza who, having fought hard against
Claudio Corti for the entire race, missed out on first by
a fraction of a second. A strong fourth place for Daniele
Beretta.
Today’s Superstock 1000 round provided the Monza fans
with a great spectacle that saw the Ducati 1198 machines of
the Ducati Xerox Junior Team up at the front of the pack.
Xavier Simeon was up there with Corti, Colucci and Fores for
the entire 11 laps of the race. The Belgian rider rode according
to a strategy, trying to force his rivals into making an error.
Left alone with Corti, Xavier made his pass at the last curve
putting everything he had into riding through the Parabolica.
A small mistake allowed the Italian to remain on the inside
of Simeon and accelerate faster than the Ducati rider. A photo
finish saw Simeon lose out on the win by a few centimetres.
XAVIER SIMEON – “To
lose by a few hundredths of a second doesn’t make me
very happy of course because I feel I had prepared a good
race strategy. I wasn’t able to pull away because the
battle with Colucci and Fores slowed me down more than once.
I tried to let Corti pass me so I could remain there in his
slipstream but he stayed behind until the end. Entering the
Parabolica I went slightly wide and this helped Corti. In
the championship we are divided now by just one point which
doesn’t worry me too much but it will be a hard season.”
It was probably only due to a small falter in his start that
Daniele Beretta missed out on a podium place today. The young
Italian was passed by several riders on the start line meaning
he had many positions to then make up. This he did though
and he concluded the race in fourth, his best result of the
season so far.
DANIELE BERETTA – “I
held the clutch for a fraction of a second too long on the
start line so that when the bike moved away it wheelied, meaning
I had to shut off the gas. Many riders then passed me and
I was more careful than usual going through the first corner.
After that I really started to ride, fast, in order to make
up the places lost. I’m sorry to have not been able
to finish on the podium but my bike today was really perfect.”
