Round 10 - PortimaoSunday Oct 25 2009Round
10 - Portimao
FIFTH WIN OF THE YEAR FOR XAVIER SIMEON AND THE DUCATI
1198 OF THE DUCATI XEROX JUNIOR TEAM. BERETTA CRASHES OUT
Portimao circuit (Portugal), Sunday 25th October 2009 –
Xavier Simeon and the Ducati 1198 of the Ducati Xerox Junior
Team won today’s final round of the 2009 season. Daniele
Beretta was unfortunately unable to complete the race after
he fell during the fourth lap.
A perfect race for the newly crowned champion. Having made a
good start the Belgian rider waited for three laps before getting
away from the pack with Claudio Corti. The duel with his Italian
rival was decided in the final kilometers when Xavier, having
taking the lap record in the previous lap, made a break and
built a gap before crossing the line first in this tenth and
final round of the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup. Of the ten races
this season, Simeon has won five and finished second in the
remaining five.
XAVIER SIMEON – “It wasn’t an easy
race as Corti proved to be a very fast rival and didn’t
let up even for a second. The modifications we made in warm-up
paid off as the bike was much improved and I was able to give
it my all in the race. In the penultimate lap I was pushing
to the limit and took the lap record, something I hoped to do
to be able to finish an incredible season in the best possible
way. With five wins, five second places and four fast laps I
think we deserved the title, an incredible joy that I share
with the entire team, with Ducati and with my family.”
Daniele Beretta was unlucky today and finished his first season
in the 1000 category with a crash. The young Italian battled
against Barrier, his closest rival in the overall standings,
and in the heat of the fray, slid off on the elevated section
of the track. Daniele thus closes the championship in sixth
position.
DANIELE BERETTA – “It
was a bad way in which to finish the season. I started ok but
in the first corners I made contact a few times with other riders.
I didn’t want Barrier to get away from me and so I pushed
hard enough as to commit a decisive error. I am very sorry,
I wanted to leave Portimao with better memories but I am grateful
to Ducati, to the team and to everyone close to me.”
